Nancy Loomis, using the alias Debbie Salt, infiltrates Windsor College as a journalist to get close to Sidney Prescott and the other survivors of the Woodsboro massacre. She reveals herself to Sidney and Gale Weathers in the campus theater, holding Gale at gunpoint. Nancy explains that she used Mickey Altieri to carry out the murders, intending to frame him and blame movie violence for the killings. She admits to murdering Randy Meeks in Joel's news van for slandering her son's name during a phone call. When Sidney points out the hypocrisy of Nancy's motives—that her abandonment fueled Billy's psychotic tendencies—Nancy attacks. Cotton Weary appears and, after Nancy tries to manipulate him into killing Sidney, he instead shoots Nancy. As Sidney, Cotton, and Gale glance over her body, Mickey resurfaces but is shot dead by Gale and Sidney. Sidney then shoots Nancy in the head to ensure her death.

Debbie Salt arrives at Windsor College as a local journalist covering the Stab premiere murders. She is present when Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley arrive, and later appears at the sorority party where Cici Cooper is killed. Her true identity is revealed in the climax: she is Nancy Loomis, mother of Billy Loomis. She confesses to orchestrating the killings with Mickey, shooting him to frame him for the spree. After Cotton shoots her, she is shot again in the head by Sidney to ensure her death.
